About Swiss Alps

Switzerland is the one country where the train is genuinely the best way to travel — 5,300 kilometres of track, most of it scenic, all of it to the minute. The Alps take up about sixty per cent of the land and the railways go straight through them, which is why a day can start on a lake at 370 metres and end on a glacier at 3,450 without anyone driving. The mountain villages are cabled and funiculared to a degree that feels excessive until you use it. Summer is meadows, wildflowers and every trail open; December to March is snow to the valley floor and half the high passes shut.

What you'll do

The four we'd book first

  1. The Glacier Express, seat booked

Eight hours from Zermatt to St Moritz over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels, in a panoramic carriage with the roof glazed.

  2. Jungfraujoch, the top of Europe

A cogwheel train tunnelled up through the Eiger to 3,454 m, with a viewing platform over the Aletsch glacier at the end of it.

  3. Walking the Eiger Trail

Six kilometres under the north face from Eigergletscher to Alpiglen — a serious wall directly above you, and no climbing involved.

  4. A lake at the end of the day

Brienz, Lucerne or Thun by paddle steamer, which is slower than the train and entirely the point.
