About Marrakesh

Marrakesh was founded in 1070 as the Almoravid capital, and the red pisé walls, the palm groves and the medina's nine thousand lanes are all still where they were put. The city works by inversion: blank walls on the street, and then a door opens onto a courtyard with a fountain, orange trees and four floors of carved cedar and hand-cut zellij. It is also the obvious door into the rest of the country — the High Atlas starts an hour out, the Dadès and Todra gorges a day beyond that, and the Erg Chebbi dunes on the Algerian side of the range, which is where Morocco stops being a city break. March to May is the best of it, with the Atlas still under snow and the medina not yet at forty degrees; October and November run a close second.

What you'll do

The four we'd book first

  1. Jemaa el-Fna at dusk

The square turns over completely at sunset — orange juice carts out, food stalls up, gnaoua drummers and storytellers working the crowd.

  2. The Ben Youssef medersa

A fourteenth-century college of 130 student cells around a courtyard of zellij, carved cedar and stucco cut so fine it looks like lace.

  3. A night on Erg Chebbi

Camels in over the last dunes at sunset to a camp with rugs and lanterns, then a sky with no light within a hundred kilometres.

  4. Bread at the neighbourhood oven

Every medina quarter still has its communal furnace, and the loaves go in on wooden paddles marked so families get their own back.
