  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Hanoi

    Into the old quarter, gear checked, and a briefing on the riding days and what the weather may do to them.

  2. Day 2

    Out to Cat Ba

    East to the island by road and ferry, then an afternoon rock climbing on the Butterfly Valley limestone with a local guide.

    Deep-water soloing

    A boat out to the Lan Ha cliffs to climb unroped above deep water, falling into the sea rather than onto a mat. Nothing else is quite like it.

  4. Day 4

    South to Phong Nha

    Back to Hanoi and the overnight train south to Đồng Hới, then into the national park and a lodge at the edge of the jungle.

    Into the caves

    Paradise cave's chambers on the boardwalk, then the wet route into Dark Cave — mud, headlamps and a zip line to get out.

    Tu Lan, or the Hang Va overnight

    A full day of river caving in the Tu Lan system: swimming through passages, a jungle trek between entrances, and lunch cooked at a cave mouth.

    North to Ha Giang

    The flight and drive north to the provincial town, bikes assigned and tested, and an early night before the loop.

    The loop, day one

    Up over the Bac Sum pass to Tam Sơn and the Quan Ba twin hills, then on to Đồng Văn through the karst geopark.

    The Ma Pi Leng pass

    The finest road in Vietnam: a cliff cut above the Nho Quế river gorge, 1,500 m up, then a homestay at Du Gia in the valley.

    Fly home

    Back to Ha Giang and the road transfer to Hanoi for the evening flight.
