Arrive in Auckland
In across the date line and met at the airport. A quiet first afternoon, then the Sky Tower and dinner on the Viaduct.

Day 2
Auckland and the Waitematā
The Auckland Museum's Māori and Pacific collections, then a ferry to Devonport and up North Head for the harbour.

South to Waitomo and Rotorua
The glowworm caves by boat under a ceiling of them, then on to Rotorua, where the whole town smells faintly of sulphur.

Geothermal Rotorua
Whakarewarewa's living village and steam-box cooking, the Wai-O-Tapu terraces and the Champagne pool, and a hāngī in the evening.

Lake Taupō and Tongariro
The Huka falls' 220,000 litres a second, then the desert road with all three Tongariro cones lined up beside it.

Fly south to Queenstown
Up to Auckland or Wellington and across to Queenstown, arriving over the Remarkables, to a hotel on Lake Wakatipu.

Queenstown and Arrowtown
The Skyline gondola up Bob's Peak, the old gold-rush lanes at Arrowtown, and a Gibbston valley cellar in the afternoon.

Milford Sound
Away early through the Homer tunnel for a cruise on the fjord before the coaches, with a stop at Mirror Lakes on the way back.

Over the Crown Range, New Zealand's highest sealed road, to a lakefront town with the whole Southern Alps behind it.

The Hooker valley track over three swing bridges to a glacial lake with icebergs in it, then a boat on the Tasman glacier lake.
